My name is Annie.

When I first moved to Arlington, Virginia three years ago, I was very frustrated because I could not get a job. Although I was filling out a lot of applications, I was not getting any interviews or offers of employment. What kept me going was that I knew no matter how bad my situation was I had to get up and do something. I could not just sit in the house.

One day a friend told me about Goodwill of Greater Washington’s job training programs. So I went to Goodwill and asked about the program. I participated in an information session, completed the application and got into the program.

Today and thanks to Goodwill I have been employed for almost one year at B.F. Saul Holiday Inn National Airport at Crystal City, an IHG affiliate, as a housekeeper.

While in Goodwill’s Hospitality Jobs Training Program, I learned a lot of skills about housekeeping and customer service.

I learned that the customer comes first and learned how to turn a bad situation into a positive guest experience.

It is very important that I do a good job and go above and beyond to make a guest happy with a clean room.

Goodwill provided me with a transportation stipend to get to class every day and a clothing voucher to get a professional outfit for interviewing. I wore my Goodwill business suit to the Goodwill job fair on the last day of class. I was so nervous. I interviewed with Aneka Deloach, Human Resources Manager for the Holiday Inn.

During the interview, I remember using all of the interview tips and recommendations that I received during the class and the mock interviews. Mrs. Deloach asked me to interview with the Executive Housekeeper. Within a week, I was working at the Holiday Inn and very happy.

Before getting the job at the Holiday Inn it was very difficult for me to pay rent. I would worry every month whether or not I would have enough money. Now, I have money to pay rent, buy food, to go out and do other stuff.

My Goodwill Career Coaches still check in on me to encourage me and make sure everything is going well.

I love my job and Goodwill for helping me.
