Author and philanthropist, MacKenzie Scott recently awarded over $4 billion in gifts to 384 nonprofit organizations around the U.S. focusing on food banks, emergency relief operations, and support services addressing long-term systemic inequities that have been deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. They include debt relief, credit and financial services for under-resourced communities, education for historically marginalized and underserved people, civil rights advocacy groups, legal defense funds that tackle institutional discrimination, and employment training.
Goodwill is a global social enterprise that operates as a coalition of 156 independent and autonomous member agencies in North America who share a common mission to educate, train, and prepare the unemployed and underemployed for careers in new or growing industries leading to sustainable and living wage employment. While Goodwill of Greater Washington was not among the gift recipients we are extremely proud and grateful that 46 other Goodwill agencies across the country, plus Goodwill Industries International, received very sizable donations. We applaud Ms. Scott for selecting Goodwill as one of the organizations worthy of her generosity.
In a time when unemployment continues to be a growing problem in many communities as a result of business closures due to the pandemic, Goodwill’s mission has never been more critical. We invite businesses, foundations, and individuals alike to follow Ms. Scott’s lead in supporting Goodwill. Through a gift to Goodwill of Greater Washington you will have a measurable impact on transforming lives and communities through the power of education and employment right here in our nation’s capital.
