It’s back-to-school time! Remember what that felt like when you were a kid?
The heady anticipation of seeing old friends and meeting new ones. The drudgery of shopping for new shoes. And the fear that you forgot everything you learned last year.
If you’re not neck deep in getting your family ready for the new school year, take a moment to relive your childlike wonder of that time.
Use this time to refresh yourself and your work experience. A few thoughts:
School supplies – Treat yourself to some new accessories. Maybe get some personalized stationery. Or buy a new purse or computer bag. Your local Goodwill store is a great place to start looking for something to brighten up your workspace.
Break out the brown bag – Instead of going out to lunch every day, pack your own. Throw in a PB&J (with the crust cut off), an apple and some fun snacks. If you really want to make a statement (and have some fun) use a lunchbox.
Reconnect with old friends – or make new ones. Maybe its time to dust off the old “What did you do on your summer vacation?” line. Everyone’s energy level goes up in the fall which can increase your networking opportunities.
Review and revisit – How is your career path progressing? Have you met your goals this year? Is it time to establish new ones?
Go to the bus stop – Change your morning routine. Add in something just for you – talk a walk through the neighborhood, go to the gym or just meditate and prepare for the day.
Organize and declutter – Now’s a good time to get your workspace in order. Whether you’re at home or in the office you can use this time to make your space more conducive for productivity. Or, add some personal flair. And, as you declutter your spaces think about taking your items to your local Goodwill Donation Center. You can find your closest one here: https://dcgoodwill.org/donation-center-locations/
Go to class – Take an adult education course. One option to consider is the Goodwill Excel Center, our adult charter high school. You can learn more about this opportunity here: https://www.goodwillexcelcenter.org/ Check with your employer to see if they offer any sort of tuition reimbursement plan. Goodwill of Greater Washington offers this as one of our many employee benefits. You can see them all here: https://dcgoodwill.org/careers/careers-at-dc-goodwill/
As you head into the new school year, embrace every opportunity for growth, learning, and connection. Make this season one to remember by staying positive, setting goals, and supporting those around you. Here's to a successful and inspiring back-to-school journey!
