Small business are the backbone of the US Economy. November 30th is small business Saturday where you are encouraged to shop at your local, small businesses.
What is a small business you ask? It is one that employs 1-499 people and generates at least $1000 in annual income, according to SBA Advocacy.
According to the Greater Washington Board of Trade, there are over 75,000 small businesses in DCV that employ over 260,000 people! Small businesses represent 98.1% of ALL businesses in DC.
Goodwill of Greater Washington is proud to be a DC area nonprofit business that is headquartered in the city. We wanted to take this opportunity to salute some of our small business in our neighborhood:
- Probably the biggest “small” business near us is the Union Market. It has been a Washington landmark for over 200 years and while it is not technically small it is home to dozens of small, local shops and eateries. You can find out more about this incredible venue at https://unionmarketdc.com/, @unionmarketdc on social.
- Looking for that perfect and unique holiday gift? What could be more local than Shop Made In DC. They feature over 5,000 items from local artisans and craftspeople. You can find them at shopmadeindc.com. @shopmadeindc on social media
- Looking to spruce up before the holidays? Then pay a visit to Scissors & Scotch. What could be better than getting a professional haircut while enjoying an adult beverage? While this is a national chain each location is locally franchised. You can make your appointment here: scissorsscotch.com/home. @scissorsscotch on social media
- There are quite literally dozens of great restaurants within walking distance of our main offices. And you can be sure our team has tried all of them at least once. Rather than provide a laundry list of all these establishments we wanted to highlight a true Washington icon: Ben’s Chili Bowl. A DC institution for over 60 years that is a must try on any culinary journey through the DMV. Find out more at benschilibowl.com. @benschilibowl in Insta & X
- Venturing a bit down the road from us in Ivy City we shine the spotlight The Bicycle Space, DC. They feature numerous social rides and have been voted the Best Bike Shop in the city. Find out more about them at: https://www.bicyclespacedc.com/our-story-1
Wherever you go this weekend, whatever your shopping or dining plans, make a point of patronizing local business where you live because they are part of what makes your neighborhood a community.
