Every year, April is recognized as National Volunteer Month - a time dedicated to celebrating the contributions of volunteers worldwide (volunteer.gov).

During this month, it is important to pause and shine a light on the selfless individuals who donate their energy, resources, and skills to make a positive impact. Taking time to volunteer is beneficial for both the individuals who volunteer and the communities they serve. Volunteerism brings a sense of purpose and fulfillment to one’s life; it allows individuals to explore their interests and passions and network in a setting that can lead to personal and professional growth. For communities, volunteers bring excitement, commitment, and support to critical projects that may have remained unaddressed.

As we celebrate National Volunteer Month, let us remember the impact of volunteerism and consider how we might lend our efforts to the causes that we cherish.

This April and beyond, Goodwill of Greater Washington wants you to volunteer! With so many ways to give back to your community, just one small act is guaranteed to transform lives.

If you would like to make a difference but do not know where to begin, here are three ways you can start volunteering today.

1. Assist Hospitals

There is no need to stress over whether you have medical experience or not; the ways to assist a hospital are endless. For example, you can provide entertainment for the patients and their families. A hospital can become an incredibly stressful environment, and this method of volunteering can bring out a smile or two.

2. Coach a Youth Sports Team

Coaching a youth sports team can be super fun and rewarding. When choosing to volunteer as a youth sports coach, you are acting as a role model, sharing your passions, and staying active. A win-win!

If you are looking to begin your volunteering journey with a local nonprofit that focuses on increasing physical activity and confidence, check out Girls on the Run of Northern Virginia, an official partner of Goodwill of Greater Washington. Girls on the Run Northern Virginia (gotrnova.org).

3. Donate Gently Used Items

For many in our greater Washington community, Goodwill is the only affordable option for purchasing clothing, shoes, and essential home goods. Therefore, donating unwanted items to your local Goodwill Donation Center is a fantastic way to give back to your community instantly. To find a Goodwill Donation Center near you, visit Goodwill Donation Centers | Goodwill of Greater Washington (dcgoodwill.org).

Don't have any items to donate? A financial gift can also change a life. Join the Goodwill movement and contribute to the cause.

All in all, it is important to remember that volunteering is not just about giving back to the community or supporting a cause close to your heart; it is about growth, connection, and the profound joy that comes from knowing you have made a difference. It is an opportunity to gain experience, meet people from diverse backgrounds, and experience the world through a lens of compassion and empathy.
