It's approaching 90 degrees today, and I know exactly what I will wear after work when I go outside: things that make me feel cool but for style and temperature! I will slide on a pair of thrifted sandals and rock a T-shirt and shorts combination that's breezy and practical.

However, the decision adventure I had to embark on this morning to decide what to wear to the office was not so simple. I had to ask myself a series of questions such as:

  • What will keep me feeling cool on my commute but comfortable in a potentially brisk office?
  • What adheres to my office dress code but nods to the feeling of summer?
  • What constitutes business casual versus poolside sandals?

Finding the right solution to this fashion equation truly felt like a brain exercise; however, after lots of experimentation, I reached multiple conclusions that I think could be useful for everyone.

Options create opportunities: It's no secret that I love to thrift at Goodwill, a local nonprofit with a mission to transform lives and communities through the power of education and employment (and my employer!). My passion for secondhand clothing has allowed me to build a diverse collection of fashion pieces without overspending. This abundance of options proves invaluable when navigating the complexities of summer fashion. Having various items to choose from enables me to assemble practical outfits rather than being limited to only a few specific textures and fabrics. Therefore, I encourage everyone to thrift with the goal of adding resources to one's wardrobe.

A Lightweight Cardigan is a Must-Have. During the winter, I love a big, thick, and cozy cardigan. It feels like I am wearing a blanket—but make it fashion! But a thick sweater is just too hot to wear and too big to carry before or after work in the summer. I suggest thrifting a lightweight cardigan that does just the trick for colder office temperatures or unexpectedly cooler post-work evening activities.

Strategically wear blazers. Blazers make me feel like a boss but are sometimes too structured and unforgiving during the summer. My solution? Score outwear pieces of unexpected fabrics and colors! I spotted this oversized, colorful blazer at Goodwill, which is breathable when it's humid outside. For under $15, I had to take it home. On another thrift trip, I spotted this white and navy designer Equipment brand blazer that gave an office-meets-nautical vibe—a perfect color combination and theme for this season!

Navigating summer office attire doesn't have to feel like work. By incorporating one, two, or all of these ideas, you can create stylish outfits that keep you comfortable throughout the entire day. Whether you’re commuting in the heat or cooling off in the office, it's easy to feel at ease and look polished all summer long.
