As the warm weather days end and the workdays seem longer due to daylight savings, we can all agree it’s time to update our winter closets. That means we’re saying goodbye to our open-toe shoes and linen sets and embracing the new kids on the block…knitwear and boots!

To ensure you are warm, cozy, and office-approved over the next few months, we’re giving you our five favorite pieces to remember while thrifting that’ll have you bundled up in style!

Oversized Sweaters:

I love the nostalgic feeling I get from wearing an oversized sweater. Maybe it's because I grew up watching Molly Ringwald movies and Saved by The Bell?

Whatever my reason may be, they’re also a hot commodity for winter workplace fashion (Marie Clarie, 2022). With the variety of patterns and colors and the toasty and snug material, for a low cost of $9, one can easily make their office attire more comfortable with this staple piece.

Riding Boots:

Riding boots are not just for horseback riding; they have become a fundamental addition to winter fashion over the past years. Pairing your favorite riding boots with a dress, a skirt, or a pair of trousers could be the duo you never knew you needed. When shopping for riding boots at Goodwill of Greater Washington, don’t forget to add boot socks to your shopping cart to keep your feet warm, cozy, and dry in the unpredictable DMV weather.

Matching Two-Piece Sets:

My love for a good matching, two-piece set is year-round. They’re super convenient and easy to play around with. You can stay safe with solid colors or have fun with bright, bold colors…the choice is yours. However, here at Goodwill of Greater Washington, we’d also like to suggest mixing and matching your favorite set pieces for a more casual look from time to time.

Trench Coats:

Your winter office coat should be confident, just like you! With many styles to choose from, a classic trench coat is always best! The sleek yet flowy appearance makes it easy to dress up or down. When shopping at your local Goodwill nonprofit retail store, be sure to search for neutral colors for the flexibility of pairing your trench with many outfit options.

Although we love a good trench, many are not designed for the harsh winter conditions. In addition to searching for neutral colors, we recommend trench coats with wool or fleece lining to ensure those spending time outside are toasty for the workday.

Midi Dress:

If a midi dress was on your list for summer office fashion, then not much has to change for your winter office attire! To make it cold-weather-friendly, choose a midi dress with sleeves and thicker material, and you’re all set!  If you decide to go sleeveless, adding a blazer, cardigan, or oversized sweater (hello, item number one!) will bring that winter touch.

No matter your choice of style, Goodwill is here to help you add pizzazz to your workplace appearance this winter. By thrifting at your favorite local nonprofit retail store, we’ve made it easy for you to be stylish yet work-appropriate at a fraction of the cost! When you shop at Goodwill, not only are you practicing sustainability, but you’re also supporting our mission to transform lives and communities through the power of education and employment!
