Parenting is difficult. I’m sure there are YouTube videos that can tell you how to change a diaper or burp a baby, but I doubt there are “how-tos” on how to be a parent. It's complicated. And, we leave a lasting impression on our children with our actions and our words.
With Father’s Day upon us, we asked our team members to share some career advice as a Dad or from their Dad.
Dillon Keeks, an Instructor at the Goodwill Excel Center shared advice as a Dad:
"We all need to start somewhere, that's fine. Keep at it. Don't quit, learn what you can on the side. Be teachable and willing to make mistakes and grow. And you'll be surprised how far you'll go."
He also shared this, from a Dad:
"Take care of business, and business will take care of you."
Nasser Al-Ali, Goodwill's Retail Assistant Manager, shared:
- Learn something new... every day
- Once you enter a workplace or begin your regular job, make it a plan to learn something new today, even if it's something very simple.
- Decide that every person you interact with today can teach you something new, whether in your direct field of work or even in a field outside your primary job.
- Smile, it costs nothing but it's priceless to others.
- Judge your success by your ability to give, not take
· Be honest, work hard and pay attention
After graduating from college, Mark Randolph, the co-founder of Netflix, got a handwritten note from his Dad offering this advice:
1. Do at least 10% more than you are asked.
2. Never, ever, to anybody present as fact opinions on things you don’t know.
3. Be courteous and considerate always — up and down.
4. Don’t knock, don’t complain — stick to constructive, serious criticism.
5. Don’t be afraid to make decisions when you have the facts on which to make them.
6. Quantify where possible.
7. Be open-minded but skeptical.
8. Be prompt.
The best present you can give on Father’s Day is to say, “Thanks, Dad.” Even if he is no longer here, he will always be with you.
