Goodwill’s Housing Initiative
Goodwill of Greater Washington has a nearly 90-year history as a local nonprofit, serving the low- to moderate-income community of more than six million Washington D.C. metro area residents. Central to its mission to transform lives and communities through the power of education and employment is working to create economic mobility and break the cycle of poverty that disproportionately affects communities of color, people with differing abilities, and populations facing barriers to employment and education.
One barrier to financial stability and economic mobility is access to affordable housing. The DC Metro region doesn’t have enough affordable housing units to keep up with the growing demand, and the average rental prices in the area remain above the national average. The District tops the region, where a two-bedroom monthly cost averages $3,100, compared to the national average of $2,000. As rents increase, thousands of people and families cannot afford a place of their own.
In response, Goodwill of Greater Washington, in partnership with Affordable Homes and Communities, is launching the country’s first retail and affordable housing co-location. By rebuilding and expanding its flagship retail store at Rt 50 and Glebe Road in Virginia, Goodwill will add more than 120 affordable housing units for individuals and families earning between 30% to 80% of the Area Median Income.
By creating economic stability through affordability, Goodwill is investing more deeply in stronger and healthier families, more vibrant neighborhoods, and a better quality of life for those in the DC Metro region. Please join Goodwill in its efforts to transform neighbors’ lives and the local community.
