Mission Moment: Tammy

A Mother’s Strength

Driven by a mother’s strength to care for her children and keep them safe, Tammy embarked on a journey to reclaim her life with the unyielding support of strong, compassionate women in her life.

After facing years of domestic violence, Tammy’s resolve blossomed from saving herself and her children into “paying it forward” by becoming a lifelong advocate for victims, and a voice for the silenced. This intrinsic passion guided her to Goodwill of Greater Washington, where her work could positively affect the lives of more women like her.

Tammy joined Goodwill six years ago and quickly ascended from Team Lead to Assistant Manager, Retail, embracing a role that melded perfectly with her altruistic spirit. “Every day I step in here, I am greeted with learning opportunities and incredible camaraderie. It feels like this was meant to be my path,” she shares with a radiant smile - a testament to Goodwill’s nurturing and empowering environment.

Goodwill provides opportunities for more than 1,000 people annually to empower themselves through educational initiatives, employment opportunities, fostering personal growth, and community development. Goodwill offers a robust support system for the community members served by its programs, including one-on-one coaching and emergency financial assistance, providing the tools and stability needed to pave the way for a brighter, more secure future.

Outside of work, Tammy revels in the joys of being a mother and a grandmother of 15. Having survived both domestic violence and cancer, Tammy epitomizes resilience. Her story illustrates the transformative power that organizations like Goodwill hold for individuals and, by extension, their families and our community.

Tammy embodies Goodwill’s nonprofit mission and continues to inspire through her leadership and compassion. Goodwill is honored to be a part of the beautiful life she has built.
