Clothing Voucher Program

Goodwill of Greater Washington launched the Good Samaritan Program in 1990 to partner with local government and community-based organizations to help people in need in the community. The clothing vouchers allow people to shop for up to $25 worth of clothing and shoes at any of the Goodwill of Greater Washington’s retail stores in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.

Since 1990, our Good Samaritan Program has quietly returned $1.8 million dollars worth of clothing to more than 300 social service-providing agencies. Last year, 97 government and nonprofit social service agencies, churches and schools helped us distribute 2,437 Good Samaritan clothing vouchers to people in need in the community. The vouchers were redeemed for $36,000 worth of clothing and shoes at Goodwill of Greater Washington stores.

All government and private social service organizations, churches and schools are eligible for Good Samaritan Program membership at absolutely no charge. Our only request is that the vouchers be redistributed to your clients that have the most need for the clothing vouchers.

Lost, stolen, or expired vouchers cannot be replaced. Goodwill of Greater Washington reserves the right to change or alter this program at any time.

Apply for Clothing Vouchers

Agencies that would like to request clothing and shoe vouchers for their clients must fill out a Good Samaritan Application form.

Email the completed form, and a copy of your agency’s IRS 501c3 approval letter, to Good-Samaritan-Program@dcgoodwill.org

Upon receipt and approval of the completed Good Samaritan application, a Goodwill of Greater Washington representative will determine the amount of vouchers to be sent to your agency. Please note that the maximum number of vouchers an agency can receive in one month is five (5) vouchers.

Expired vouchers will not be exchanged for new ones. Please resubmit a new application form for consideration.

ALL applications must include a copy of the IRS 501(c)(3) approval letter, if applicable.

All vouchers sent out will expire 60 days from the issue date. You may send in another application request once all of your vouchers have been distributed to your clients. Please do not request more than you will need in one calendar month.

Additional vouchers may be requested on a case-by-case basis for emergency situations such as house fires and floods. Please call (202) 715-2647 for details.

How to Redeem Your Vouchers

Clients may redeem vouchers at any one of our Goodwill stores in the Greater Washington area (VA, MD, DC). Ensure the recipient’s name, date of issue, counselor’s name/agency and phone are filled out on each voucher. Clients possessing incomplete vouchers will not be served.

Recipients must also show a valid photo ID to the store manager before redeeming their vouchers. Please note that this program requires that only 1 (one) voucher per client be distributed at a time.
