Frequently Asked Questions: Point of Sale Transition
Starting on September 9th, 2026, Goodwill of Greater Washington retail stores will be transitioning from simple price stickers to detailed barcode pricing tags. Each week, a new set of stores will be transitioned. The length of time to fully transition each store will be approximately five weeks.
The new model will lead to greater efficiency and a better shopping experience for our customers. No longer will there be any lack of clarity on the price of an item; any discounts will be automatically applied; and the checkout process will be faster.
The price of some merchandise may slightly increase, and the price of some merchandise may slightly decrease, but overall our pricing will remain relatively consistent to what customers are already paying.
What Shoppers Will Notice
- Our items will now be marked with QR-coded tags. This will improve our inventory tracking and processing of new donations and help us get items to the sales floor more efficiently.
- As a result of the new point of sale system customers may be asked to re-register their membership information if their record did not transfer successfully to the new system.
- Customers can easily scan a QR code at the point of sale and quickly enter their name, email, phone number, and zip code if they wish to join our Goodwill Rewards Club for additional savings. This will also be helpful should they have an exchange in the future. Shoppers can still also join the Goodwill Rewards Club by visiting dcgoodwill.org.
- Overall, our exchange policy will not change.
The answers to the following FAQ’s may help you better understand why Goodwill of Greater Washington is making this transition and how it will operate.
Why is Goodwill of Greater Washington transitioning to a new barcoding pricing model?
- The new barcoding model will allow us to access our data live, allowing more immediate and accurate insights into our performance. It will also allow us to be a more future-proof organization as it is a more innovative approach already adopted by most retailers. We will have the ability to add more features to this system, improving customer experience and our own efficiency, down the road.
How will this new system benefit me as a customer?
- The new barcoding model will lead to greater efficiency and a better shopping experience for our customers.
- Merchandise will be processed and moved to the floor faster
- No longer will there be any lack of clarity on the price of an item
- All discounts will be automatically applied
- The checkout process will be faster.
Will this result in higher prices?
- As a result of the new barcode pricing model, pricing will become more consistent across Goodwill’s portfolio of stores. This could lead to some items increasing slightly in price, while others decrease slightly in price. However, overall, the pricing will not vary significantly from where it is now.
Will the new barcoding system impact my Goodwill Rewards Club membership benefits?
- All Goodwill Rewards Club discounts will continue to be honored. It will also speed up the checkout process because discounts will automatically be applied to the merchandise at the point of sale. Goodwill team members will not need to manually enter the discount.
Will I need to register again for the Goodwill Rewards Club?
- Registering for the Goodwill Rewards Club may be required by any member who previously registered using an inauthentic or misspelled email address because the new system will not be able to authenticate their membership data. This is not directly impacted by the new pricing model, but rather by the new point of sale system recently installed in all Goodwill of Greater Washington retail stores.
Will the barcoding model be applied to all Goodwill merchandise?
- Some Goodwill merchandise, like appliances, electronics, and housewares are already unit priced, so it will have no impact on those items. The new barcoding model will primarily apply to clothing and accessories.
How long will it take to implement the new barcoding system?
- We anticipate the rollout to all stores will take approximately five weeks per store. It could take slightly longer if we experience any unexpected snags along the way.
Will exchanges still be honored during and after the transition?
- Yes, all exchanges will continue to be honored during and after the transition based on existing Goodwill of Greater Washington exchange policies.
Do I need to do anything differently at checkout?
- Our customers should not expect to do anything differently. However, they should expect a faster checkout experience.
Will the new pricing model and point-of-sale system allow Goodwill of Greater Washington to sell gift cards?
- We want to ensure that the new point-of-sale system and barcoding model are operating at peak efficiency first. But Goodwill’s long-term plans may include the introduction of a gift card program.
