In the words of Madonna...."Holiday...celebrate!."

The month of holiday parties is now upon us, and I know my calendar is rapidly populating with seasonal celebrations and festivities. Within my packed schedule is one get-together that I especially look forward to: my workplace's holiday party. This time is particularly special to me because everyone of all backgrounds and faiths at work gets a chance to enjoy one another's company and embody the winter spirit together.

In preparation for the big gathering, I do stress about one thing. Surprisingly, it's about something other than what gifts and/or cards to purchase for colleagues. It's about what to wear for the festive shindig!

When navigating my closet, I keep these holiday party attire do's and don'ts in mind.

DON'T wear attire that makes you wonder if it adheres to your workplace's dress code. You are still at work, not at a friend's party.

DO head to Goodwill to thrift festive sweaters. Instead of heading to a big-box store to pick up a look that someone else likely has, save the planet, help the community AND find a truly unique piece by exploring Goodwill's selections. With every purchase, more than 91 cents of every dollar spent is funneled back into the organization's free career services and education programs.

DON'T wear uncomfortable shoes. We know that high-heeled stilettos can be very stylish, but they might not withstand a festivity where you have to stand on your feet for long periods of time.

DO get creative! Using craft supplies and thrift finds, you can assemble a look that truly showcases your winter spirit AND shows your colleagues another fun side of you!

DON'T outfit shame. Participation is not mandatory. If a co-worker chooses not to participate, don't call them out.

DO be respectful of other cultures and faiths. A workplace holiday party is a time to celebrate each other, not push one's agenda. It is, however, essential to bring your authentic self to work.

DON'T forget a sweater! Depending on where you live, this time of the year can be quite chilly. Remember your layers if you're wearing a sleeveless or short-sleeved garment to the party! It's the worst when you're trying to have fun but can't get over how cold you feel.

DO participate in group ideas. Play along if the office wants to sport a winter pajama-themed vibe. It is great for team-building and chemistry.

From all of us here at Goodwill of Greater Washington, we would like to wish you a happy and healthy holiday season filled with plenty of fun, great memories, and Goodwill fashion!
