Sometimes, the most transformative career moves aren’t planned; they happen unexpectedly and often within familiar surroundings. An internal shift to a new role within the same company can seem intimidating at first, especially when it falls outside one’s original path or comfort zone. But these unanticipated changes often lead to surprising growth, fresh perspectives, and renewed enthusiasm for work.
Angela Brooks, a dedicated employee for the local nonprofit, Goodwill of Greater Washington, shares her story of how starting at Goodwill almost 10 years ago has truly transformed her life.
1. Can you start by telling me what your original role was within the organization?
I started working with Goodwill in October 2015 as a sales associate. My first assignment was helping with the opening of the Kings Hwy store, working alongside Dawn Holland, Andrea Craven, Kia Law, and Stephen Jackson. A few months later, I was asked to move to the Alexandria store to help with the shortage of associates. In September 2016, I moved to Cryden Warehouse as an eCommerce Associate, was promoted to Senior Jewelry Specialist in August 2018, and later transitioned to Customer Service Coordinator in October 2023. In May 2024, I transitioned to an Administrative Receptionist at HQ, working alongside the marketing team.
2. How did the unexpected career change happen—was it due to restructuring, a sudden opportunity, or something else? What was your initial reaction when you first learned about the change?
My transition to HQ happened due to the relocation of the eCommerce warehouse to Gainesville, VA. My initial reaction to the change was hesitant at first, mostly due to the commute and the comfort level that had been established at the Cryden warehouse. I later embraced the change as new connections with team members at HQ were developed. Ultimately, the transition turned out to be very positive because it opened up a new growth opportunity for my new role as Development Coordinator, which I acquired in July 2025.
3. As you transitioned into the new role, what challenges did you face? Did you feel supported by leadership or your colleagues during that period? How did your team respond to your shift in responsibilities or position?
The challenge I faced was reduced confidence due to the little experience I have with Development however, I do feel supported by leadership and my colleagues. Everyone has been very encouraging and has provided positive feedback. The marketing team has responded very positively, and we continue to build a strong collaborative relationship.
4. On a more personal level, how has this change impacted your life outside of work? Has it influenced your mindset, lifestyle, or overall well-being? Professionally, do you feel this change has altered your long-term career goals or opened up new possibilities you hadn’t considered before?
This change has positively influenced my mindset and overall well-being. I'm learning new skills, which I embrace as a learning opportunity that will create competence, which in turn will increase my confidence. This new role will also open doors for continued growth in a field I hadn't originally considered.
5. What have you learned about yourself through this process? What advice would you give to someone else who’s facing an unexpected role change within the same organization?
I've learned that I have a high level of adaptability. In this new role, I have been seeking tutorials and asking clarifying questions to quickly integrate with my new team. I would advise others in the same situation that keeping a positive attitude will give you the capacity to thrive in new and unfamiliar situations.
6. Finally, how do you see your journey unfolding from here, and what are you looking forward to in your continued growth within the organization?
I see my journey unfolding with acquiring new skills to enhance competency in my current role that would lead to continued growth within the organization while demonstrating my commitment to Goodwill and contributing its success!
All in all, unexpected career changes within a company often come as a surprise, but they can lead to outcomes that benefit both the individual and the organization. What initially may feel like a disruption can become an opportunity to grow, adapt, and contribute in new, meaningful ways. These transitions can unlock potential, strengthen collaboration, and align people with roles where they can truly thrive.
