We’re Grateful for You, Our Partners
The decision to temporarily close Goodwill’s 20 retail stores and donation centers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic was difficult. But it was important for the health and safety of our community, even as more than 600 of our retail associates were furloughed.
Our mission begins at home and standing with our furloughed retail associates was the right thing to do. So was starting a Virtual Career Center to offer training and resources for hundreds across our community, and partnering with the Capital Area Food Bank to deliver food for our neighbors during this challenging time.
We’re grateful for the individual, corporate and foundation partners whose generosity has made it possible to continue fulfilling our mission. Our longtime partner Truist Bank provided a life-changing $100,000 contribution in support of our furloughed community. The United Way of the National Capital Area also awarded Goodwill a $25,000 grant last month, that will continue to support our associates employee portion of health care coverage.
And perhaps the most warming, were the 367 individual donors (153 first-time donors) who reached into their pockets to uplift their neighbors during this time. And we are most thankful to the couple who generously gave $100,000 to support the mission of our Goodwill as we continue moving forward this year to serve our community.
As I shared when we were notified of the United Way award: “This gift will allow us to support our team members as they prepare to transition back to employment in our retail stores. Reopening our stores will allow Goodwill to once again generate critical funding for our job training, education and employment programs so critically needed right now by our community.”
What continues to inspire me is the tremendous opportunity we have to rebuild our Goodwill together with partners like you. You give me hope for the future and in shaping the Goodwill our region needs as we recover from this pandemic. Thank you for standing with our Goodwill, our associates and those across our community who need us most.
