United Way NCA Grant Award Supports Healthcare for Furloughed Retail Associates
We are grateful for the individual, corporate and foundation partners whose generosity made it possible to continue fulfilling our mission during the temporary closure of our retail stores.
The United Way of the National Capital Area, one of our longtime partners, awarded Goodwill of Greater Washington a $25,000 grant in May. At a time when GGW needed to walk closely with our associates, United Way showed up in a tremendous way.
This grant was instrumental in offsetting the out-of-pocket employee portion of healthcare coverage (allowing in some cases hundreds of dollars to be spent elsewhere by our associates where they most needed to support their families). In addition, it also provided Uber rides for associates who had major transportation challenges getting to work, and continue to be faced with the challenge of reliable and safe transportation modes.
As Catherine Meloy, President and CEO of our Goodwill, shared when we were notified of the award: “Goodwill of Greater Washington is honored to have the generous support of the United Way of the NCA as we continue to walk beside our associates. This gift will allow us to support our team members as they prepare to transition back to employment in our retail stores.
Reopening our stores will allow Goodwill to once again generate critical funding for our job training, education and employment programs so needed right now by our community.”
