Women’s History Month Spotlight: Michelle Cousins
Throughout March, our nation will proudly celebrate Women’s History Month, a time when we’ll collectively highlight extraordinary accomplishments and historical contributions made by women.
As a part of our organization’s celebrations, we will spotlight members of our Goodwill family and share the importance of Women’s History Month, in their own words, through the lenses of their unique experiences.
Meet Michelle Cousins.
Retail Team Leader – Clinton, MD
“Good afternoon, may I help you find anything today?” is what you’ll likely hear from Michelle Cousins as you enter the Clinton, MD Goodwill. Michelle’s infectious upbeat personality and desire to help are just a few of the qualities that make her an excellent leader. They are also the qualities she inherited from her late mother, one of the most incredibly inspirational women in her life. “My mother had the true heart of a servant. She was the glue that held our family together, so her passing completely took us all by surprise”. An impact that Michelle still feels.
Michelle also draws inspiration from the late author, Toni Morrison. As an author and columnist herself, Michelle appreciates the storytelling of many of Morrison’s books. “The Bluest Eye was one of my favorite books when I was younger. That and many of her other books have greatly influenced me throughout my life”. When asked if she had encountered any roadblocks as a woman author, Michelle had this to say. “The biggest roadblock I encountered was myself. I would sometimes overthink my next step, which could have quickly led to procrastination if I weren’t careful. As authors, we have to overcome the feeling of being complacent, which can be challenging, and push through our negative thoughts”.
Thankfully, Michelle has a strong support system rooted in faith and friendship to keep her focused whenever faced with challenges. “You’re going to come up against a stumbling block here and there, but, as a believer, my spirituality gives me strength to press forward. I’ll listen to praise and worship music and speak with my sister circle. They encourage me and provide tough love and a different perspective that I appreciate”.
While reflecting on the past and celebrating her present successes, I asked Michelle what mark she’d hope to leave behind for other women in the future. “I often think about my mortality and how much time I have left, and a little advice I’d like to leave behind would be to not compete with your sister. Never consider other women to be your competition or your enemy. When we encourage each other, we will grow together. Also, practice self-care often. When you take care of yourself, you are better equipped to care for others, so don’t forget to refill your cup before you pour into someone else”.
Impressive words to live by, Michelle. Thank you for sharing your personal story about the women who inspire you.
